Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a global nonprofit organization that operates with one guiding principle: Hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge.
AVID’s education system brings research-based curriculum and strategies each day that helps students with critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but may be falling short of their potential. AVID places these students on the college track, requiring them to enroll in the most rigorous courses that are appropriate for them, such as Honors, Advanced Placement, or AICE. To support them in the rigorous coursework, AVID students learn organizational and study skills, develop critical thinking, learn to ask probing questions, receive academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities to make their college dreams reality. Many of these students will be the first of their family to graduate high school.
